When you need more than one or two parts, but not 100's or 1,000's,cast urethane molds can be used to produce up to about 20 pcs. per mold in either hard or soft materials. These parts are great for building multiple prototypes to validate a design before moving to hard tooling and a small pilot run. For most parts we make the master model using SL, then apply whatever surface finish is needed. In cases where a high gloss finish is desired, we CNC machine and polish an acrylic master model. We then pour liquid silicone rubber around the master model in a casting box. Once cured, we split the silicone rubber mold at a parting line. We can simulate a full range of thermoplastics and elastomers, and parts can be colored to any Pantone number. We can over-mold one material with another to simulate, for example, rubber over ABS, or opaque plastic over transparent plastic. It is also possible to over-mold threaded inserts. Vacuum cast prototypes can be colored and textured in the mold or a secondary painting process can be applied to the parts. |
